He stood in the middle of his office, the old letter to his mentor, the one who had guided his career, in his hand. The weight of his decisions over the past year pressed down on him. The letter seemed to be judging him, reflecting back his vulnerabilities. The temperature in the room was suddenly stifling. He loosened his tie, his fingers fumbling with the knot. Outside, the city roared, a symphony of sirens and horns that grated against his nerves. He felt a desperate urge to flee, to escape the suffocating weight of expectation. He kicked a wastebasket across the room, the clang of metal against the wall a brief release.
